Understand The Value of NO HAND Judo

NO HAND Judo

Reason #3 why you need Ugly Judo 101: Morote Gari: You don’t have any No Hand Judo.

How do I know that? Because I can count on one hand the number of judoka in America who have No Hand judo techniques. No Hand techniques are techniques in judo that do not require a grip before attacking. They have to be the most valuable techniques to perfect in Modern Judo.

Morote Gari is a No Hand technique. There are gripping setups for Morote Gari, which we cover in Ugly Judo 101: Morote Gari, but it does not require a grip to attack.

The beauty of having No Hand judo techniques is it adds another dimension to your gripping sequences. Once you have attacked once with Morote Gari, or another No Hand technique, it is no longer assumed that each exchange in a match will begin in a gripping exchange. Your opponent now has to respect the possibility that you may attack before gripping.

This can be a tremendous equalizer if you are fighting a technically superior opponent. In my match at the Olympics against Hiroaka of Japan, I used my Morote Gari and Kuzure Morote Gari/Single to limit the time in the match where we were in a classic two hand judo contest where I clearly did not have an advantage.

Yes! I am saying Hiroaka is obviously better than me at classic judo techniques. I wouldn’t fool myself and say otherwise. With the addition of the No Hand technique Morote Gari and other tactical advice from Rhadi and Jimmy Pedro, I was able to move much of the contest time into an area that I was superior and it gave me a chance to win.

Do not ignore No Hand judo! Like Ne Waza, it is an area of competition judo where not many people spend time learning and is therefore an area which if practiced well, can put you above your competition quickly.
